Over the past 3 years, we have been interviewing local residents about life in Knaresborough during the 1930s, 40s and 50s. From overcrowded gas lit housing to acts of incredible heroism during WW2, the project aims to record these powerful stories before they are lost forever.
The Memories Project covers childhood, living conditions, school days and teenage years, holidays, work-life and buying or renting a first home, as well as wartime memories. This project brings Knaresborough’s social history vividly to life, enhanced by oral history sound recordings, personal photos and artefacts. The information gathered will contribute to an ongoing social history archive that we are developing and digitising over time, which will be available, in the future, for local and family historians as well as schools and community groups.
